Romanian Elena Gabriela Ruse announced that unfortunately, she would not compete in the Billie Jean Cup qualifiers in 1st round against Poland due to physical fitness concerns.
In the Billie Jean Cup 2022 Qualifiers schedule, Romania will meet Poland from 15th to 16th April at Radomskie Centrum Sportu, Radom, Poland. World No.56 Elena Gabriela Ruse had also been included in the Romanian line-up with Irina-Camelia Begu, Monica Niculescu, and Raluca Olaru.
However, the 24-year-old from Bucharest has now decided to pull out of the historical event due to illness.
“I struggled with viral pneumonia followed by having COVID-19 for the whole month of February, even playing Dubai on antibiotics. Never wanting to give up, I did my best to recover and compete in the US,” Ruse wrote in her recent Twitter post.
“The US had a slow start, and I could feel the aftermath of being ill for so long. I started feeling better towards Miami, although I was struggling to push for more than two games at a time.”
“However, in Charleston, I felt slow, robbed of energy, and struggled on more extended plays. Further investigation revealed inflammation of my heart. My body needs rest and a staged return to physical effort.”
“I have had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from the Billie Jean Cup and be out of competition for the coming weeks. The Billie Jean Cup holds a very special place in my heart, and it has always been an extraordinary feeling playing for my country.”
“I look forward to coming back stronger than ever. See you all soon,” Romanian concluded.
Most recently, Elena Gabriela Ruse competed in the Charleston Open 2022, where she fell in the first round to host Hailey Baptiste. Moreover, she has a win-loss record of 10-7 in 2022.
