Estonian stalwart Anett Kontaveit beat host Simon Halep in straight sets(6-2, 6-3) to capture her fourth title of the season at the Transylvania Open 2021. Remarkably, the 25-year-old also secured her place in the race of WTA Finals 2021 Guadalajara.

“I’m still unsure of what’s going on!. Of course, I’m incredibly happy that I managed to play really well today and win the final. That was the main focus and I’m really, really proud of myself that I managed to do that,” Kontaveit said in the post-match press conference in Cluj Napoca.

Kontaveit stunned Halep for the first time in the four meetings and now their head-to-head series is 1-3.

Speaking about the first win over Romanian, Estonian explained, “I believe in myself a little bit more than I did a couple of years ago, and I was trying to be aggressive but also stay consistent, and not go for too much.”

“I think she is such a good player, and I really tried to just focus on myself and not think about the three times that I had lost to her. I just took it as a new challenge,” Kontaveit added.

“Kontaveit Definitely Deserved To Win The Match’, says Simona Halep

On the other hand, Simona Halep was pleased with playing her first final of the season at home after the setback. She also lauded her final match opponent.

“She(Anett Kontaveit) definitely deserved to win the match. I just tried to make it longer a little bit, but I couldn’t. But many positives this week: to play a final after a tough year, it’s always welcome,” Halep said after the match.

“Even if it’s the smaller trophy, it’s a trophy, so I feel happy, I feel pleased with the way I played this week,” the 30-year-old added.
