Romanian star Simona Halep has been struggling with her form for more than a year due to injury concerns. As a consequence, she is now ranked out of the top 10. However, she revealed her current desire that she wants to regain old shape despite her match results.
After the setbacks, Halep now plays at the local WTA 250 event, Transylvania Open 2021. In that, No.1 seed Simona reached the second round after a comfortable victory over countrywoman Elena Gabriela Ruse.
In the post-match interview, Simona was asked how she faced her compatriot opponent in front of the home crowd.
“It was a pretty difficult match. The pressure to play at home against a Romanian woman is always quite high,” Halep said (Quotes Have Been Translated Into English Via Google Translator)
“I was focused, I knew what to do and I felt in control. The game went very well, just as I had planned with the coaches before the game.”
“I like those shots very much and I always profit and try and, even if I don’t succeed every time, at least I tried.”
“Serena Williams Intimidated Me A Lot”, says Simona Halep
The 30-year-old from Constanta continued, “I am ready for the final. Every match is hard, no matter the tournament, no matter what level you are at.”
Speaking about her current desire, Halep highlighted, “It’s a comeback from a serious injury. I’m not interested in the result, I want to feel good on the field and reach the level I had before.”
“I don’t think who I’m playing against, I’ve learned this over the years. Serena Williams intimidated me a lot and then I couldn’t play on the field. Now it only matters to enter the field and do my job.”
In the round of 16, Halep will face Russian Varvara Gracheva on the indoor hard court in Cluj Napoca.
