Amid retirement rumours, former World No.1 Serena Williams has begun preparation ahead of the French Open 2021. American has now practised under his coach Patrick Mouratoglou’s supervision in his tennis academy in French Riviera.
Following two months of break, Serena had been hitting balls vigorously on a clay court since last week. Recently, the coach posted video clips of Serena’s training on his social media pages. It seems like she has practised forehand and double hand backhand.
Last year in Paris, No.6 seeded Serena defeated her compatriot Kristie Ahn in straight sets in the opening encounter. But, she withdrew from the event before facing Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round due to an Achilles injury.
Junior Williams started the season at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne. Therein, she withdrew before competing against Ashleigh Barty in the semifinal due to a right shoulder injury.
Later in the Australian Open, No.10 seeded Serena confirmed her last-four spot for the 9th time after defeating No.2 seeded Simona Halep, and No.7 seeded Aryna Sabalenka. But, she fell in the semifinal to eventual champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets.
Eight-time title winner’s presence was expected at the Miami Open. Few days before the event beginning, she pulled out owing to oral surgery. And Serena also has skipped the ongoing Mutua Madrid Open.
However, if Serena wins the title under Philippe Chatrier roof this year, she will level with Margaret Court in the most Grand Slam winner’s record(24).
