Greek Tennis ace Maria Sakkari booked her second consecutive semifinal spot at Abu Dhabi Women’s Tennis Open after back-to-back stunning performances against the WTA Tour’s top players.

In the round of 16, World No.22 steered past two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the straight sets. Next, Greek sent top seed Sofia Kenin packing after quarter-final encounter.

For a championship match place, the 9th seed Sakkari will lock horns with 4th seed Aryna Sabalenka, who plays her third straight semi-final at 2021 season curtain-raising event.

When speaking about her next round opponent in the post-match interview, Maria Sakkari said, “(Sabalenka is) super confident now. We know each other really well. We practice a lot together. She’s having a great career so far, and she’s really young. She’s one of the toughest players to play out there.”

“It’s Going To Be A Very Tough Match For Both”, says Maria Sakkari

Sakkari faced Sabalenka four times in the WTA Tour so far, but she bested 22-years-old Belarusian only in the first meeting, 2019 Western and Southern Open third round.

“I beat her once, so I think I can do it again. I’m not saying I will for sure, but it’s going to be a very tough match for both,” Sakkari added.

On the other hand, Aryna Sabalenka beat Maria Sakkari in the last three meetings. World No.10 especially conquered 25-years-old Greek during the last year Dubai Tennis Championships and Doha Open.

However, the wind is now blowing towards Sakkari due to her past performances in this tournament. She fired 31 aces so far, which is more than double of Sabalenka served.
