Only a couple of days left to begin the first Grand Slam of the year, World No.2 Simona Halep suffered from a back injury during the Gippsland Trophy quarterfinals with Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday. However, now the 29-years-old Romanian admits that she is not very worried while she is still careful.
Due to unfavourable Melbourne’s weather conditions, Simona Halep-Ekaterina Alexandrova quarterfinal match was held indoors in Margaret Court Arena. Consequently, Tournament organizers turned on the air conditioners, which eventually suffered the main favourite of the match none other than Simona Halep.
As a result, Top-seed Halep gave up her singles quarter-final match to ninth seed Alexandrova in the straight sets. And she walked over from the doubles quarter-final match as well.
“Yesterday I had back problems due to the air conditioning. The muscle was a bit blocked, but I had a treatment last night and this morning, so I feel better now,” Simona Halep gave a health update during a press conference ahead of the Australian Open 2021 on Saturday.
“I Had The Same Problem Last Year At Roland Garros”,says Simona Halep
A woman from Constanta also emphasised that she had the same health issue during the 2020 French Open, which was hosted under strong and cold windy weather conditions. Notably, Simona Halep, one of the tournament’s favourites, lost her fourth-round match to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the straight sets.
2018 Paris major title winner continued, “There is nothing dangerous! I’m used to it because it happens to me when it’s so cold. I had the same problem last year at Roland Garros because it was cold outside. So, I’m not very worried, but I’m still careful.”
At the Australian Open 2021, the second-seed Simona Halep will lock horns with host and World No.140 Lizette Cabrera in her opening match on 8th February.
