“Really Exciting”: Naomi Osaka on Facing Garbine Muguruza at Australian Open 2021 Fourth Round

After beating Tunisian No.1 Ons Jabeur, the three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka set up blockbuster Spaniard Garbine Muguruza clash at the Australian Open 2021.

In the first official match with Jabeur, the US Open reigning served eight aces and saved four out of the seven breakpoints. A 22-years-old tennis star from Japan eventually ousted World No.30 without dropping a single set(6-3, 6-2).

“Today was really tough for me because I didn’t know what to expect. I just thought I fought really well, and for me, that’s the biggest thing I can take away from the match,” Osaka said in a post-match interview. 

Speaking about Ons Jabeur, Naomi expressed, “I was kind of more excited than anything to play her because I always watch her play on TV, and it looks enjoyable. Like her shot choices, I would never do them, but it seems fun to watch. Just having that variety in the game, I’m glad that everyone doesn’t play the same.”

The 2019 title winner at Melbourne Park will now fight with two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza for a quarterfinal spot on Sunday.

Muguruza is a title winner at the 2016 French Open, and 2017 Wimbledon and reached the final at the 2020 Aussie Open. 

For the first time meeting, one of the WTA Tour experienced players, Garbine Muguruza, Naomi Osaka said, “I’ve practised with her once.” 

Two-time US Open champion continued, “But it was on grass, and I was younger. It was maybe a couple of years ago. But I remember being really impressed by her.” 

“I’ve watched her Wimbledon win and the French Open when I was younger, and I’ve always wanted to have the chance to play her. So for me, this is really exciting,” Osaka concluded. 

Naomi Osaka is excited about playing against Garbine Muguruza while fans are ecstatic over this mouthwatering clash.
