Belarusian Victoria Azarenka extended her head-to-head record over German Angelique Kerber to a whopping 9–1, following a straight-sets win at the Miami Open 2021. However, former World No.1 will now lock horns with World No.1 Ashleigh Barty for a quarter-final berth.
It was not a piece of cake for No.14 seed Azarenka to defeat the three-time Grand Slam champion on Miami Garden’s hardcourt. The two-time Australian Open title winner fought back from 1-4 to capture the first set(7-5). And she eventually took the second set(6-2) from the No.24 seed without any pressure and confirmed her spot at the Round of 16.
“It’s never like an easy match, so it’s always a really quality match. I think that our games do match pretty well,” a mother of a son said in the post-match interview.
Ashleigh Barty Has A Lot Of Variety, says Victoria Azarenka
To reach the third quarter-final of the season, Azarenka will now meet her former doubles partner Australian Ash Barty. Both of them tied(1-1) in their head-to-head series.
No.1 seed from Queensland is an all-court all-rounder and especially known for her wide variety of shots, excellent serve. The 2019 French Open champion has already won this season’s first title at the Yarra Valley Classic after stunning Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.
Azarenka said of her next round opponent Barty, “She’s a very talented player. I always have been a huge fan of her game and the way she plays, the way she handles herself. She has a lot of variety. She has pretty much every single shot there is. (It’s) going to be a great match.”
Ash Barty bested the former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets(6-3, 6-2) before reaching the Round of 16.
Hopefully, the former World No.1 and current World No.1 will provide a mouthwatering clash for devoted tennis fans. Never forget to grab a popcorn box before going to watch.
