WTA Finals In Shenzhen Still A Part Of Women’s Tennis Revised Plans For 2020


China is a major part of the WTA tour every year and so is it this year also. The 2020’s revised plans show China hosting several events for the WTA tour. Moreover, The seven tournaments, including cash-rich WTA finals in Shenzhen, will take place in October-November this year.

“To our knowledge, the report that has been circulated regarding a principle on international sporting events in China does not represent a final decision,” the women’s governing body made a statement to the Reuters.

The Women’s Tennis Association authorities have not received any confirmation from China regarding the organization of the various WTA events in the country. But they continue to prominently include China in their revised plans for the year.“We remain on track with our decision timeline regarding the 2020 WTA Tour provisional calendar, which will be by the end of July.”

Now It’s Just A ‘Waiting Game’- WTA Wuhan Open Director

However, the Chinese sports authorities do not seem to be interested in hosting any sports event apart from the trials for the 2022 Beijing winter Olympics this year. 

According to Brenda Perry, the co-director of Wuhan Open, it is just a ‘waiting game’ now and that the WTA is in touch with the GAS and the Chinese Tennis Association.

Even though the coronavirus cases seem to be under control in the country after its peak in February, the sports authorities remain cautious regarding the events taking place in the country.

Furthermore, the Chinese Basketball Association became the first professional sports league to resume its operations in the country in June, on the other hand, the top-tier soccer league (CSL) will kick off its 2020 season later in July, after a delay of five months.

Although, the GAS (China’s General Administration of Sport) told Reuters, “there is no definite answer yet” on the fate of the tennis tournaments in China. In conclusion, waiting is the only option we have regarding the WTA tournaments to take place in China this year!
