The Western and Southern Open 2020 Thursday matches canceled and will resume on Friday. With the killing of a black man in Wisconsin by a police officer, protests have started in the sports domain as well.

Additionally, this statement arrived from the organizers just after Naomi Osaka, a women tennis professional has withdrawn her name from the tournament. She was to play in the semi-finals of the Western and Southern Open 2020.

The statement said, “As a sport, tennis is collectively taking a stance against social injustice and racial inequality that one again has been thrust to the forefront in the United States.” Now, the matches will re-start on Friday

The reactions came pouring after Jacob Blake was shot down in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday. A white police officer pulled bullets into the man 7 times. The city is in unrest and additionally, two people have died due to the violence.

Besides, Naomi Osaka took it to her Twitter handle to express her opinion on the same. She wrote on 26th August, “I was scheduled to play in the semi-finals match tomorrow. However, before I am an athlete, I am a black woman. And as a black woman, I feel there are more important things that need to pay attention to, than just watching me play tennis.”

In addition to this, she also said, “I do not expect anything drastic to happen. But if this could lead to a conversation in a majority white sport, I consider that as a step in the right direction.”

Moreover, she added, “Watching the continuous genocide of people at the hands of police is making me sick in my stomach. I am extremely tired of having the same conversation again and again.”

Not many days have passed since the killing of black man George Floyd which saw violent riots in the country. And this time too, the investigation is going on while the city sees protests.
