“Wasn’t Very High In The Standings”: Andrey Rublev Recalls His Precious Moment With Roger Federer

While we can count on our fingers people who hate the humble person in the tennis circuit Roger Federer, we never measure his lovers. Swiss is also famous for his humor sense across the tennis world. However, Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev reveals his memorable moments with the legend Roger. 

In a recent interview with Sport Express, the world number eight Rublev reminisced plenty of things in his career. Speaking about his victory over 20-times Grand Slam champion Roger Federer at the last year’s Cincinnati masters, he said, “Of course it was incredible, especially when I shook his hand at the end of the match and he congratulated me.”

“But at that time, I wasn’t very high in the standings. I was far from my level today. Many of my “conscripts” were higher than me. Even younger guys like Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur had more convincing results. Let’s not talk about Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was already firmly in the top 10. at the time. So I especially realized that I still had to work and work to try to get closer to the top ten.” the 23-years-old Russian added.

“Gave Me Some Confidence”: Andrey Rublev

To date, many of the young players have a dream to hit a ball against the Swiss maestro. Simultaneously, Rublev defeated the former world number one in straight sets at their first meeting.    

After winning a match against Roger Federer, Andrey Rublev feels, “It gave me some confidence. I understood things. Now, I became confident when I entered the court. This was not the case in 2019, even after the success against Roger.”

While Federer is on rehabilitation leave, Rublev is showcasing his best tennis in the ATP Tours. Russian won four titles till now this year.
