Victoria Azarenka Becomes Champion at Western and Southern Open 2020 After Naomi Osaka’s Withdrawal


Western and Southern Open 2020 women’s singles final match was scheduled between Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka on Saturday(29th August) in Flushing Meadows. However, Former US Open Champion Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from finals due to an injury. 

World number ten Naomi said, “I’m sorry to have to withdraw today with an injury.” Additionally, She added, “I pulled my left hamstring yesterday in the second set tiebreak and it has not recovered overnight as I had hoped. This has been an emotional week and I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support.”

Followed by Osaka’s walkover, Former world number one Victoria Azarenka becomes the winner at Western and Southern Open 2020 singles event. 

Belarusian made her first singles final in the WTA Tours at Cincinnati Open 2020 since Monterrey Open in April 2019. Besides, She did not win a (singles)tennis match from Cincinnati 2019 to Cincinnati 2020. Azarenka is currently ranking 59th in the world. 

Women’s Doubles Final Match schedule changes at W&S Open 2020

After women’s single final match cancellation due to Naomi Osaka’s hamstring injury, Women’s doubles final match schedule has been revised.

Organizers stated, “Today’s schedule has been modified to move the women’s doubles championships into Armstrong Stadium. At 11 a.m., the women’s singles trophy presentation will take place, followed by women’s doubles final. The men’s singles championship remains at not before 1 p.m.” 

The match will be played between Kveta Peschke(CZE) and Demi Schuurs(NED) vs Nicole Melichar(USA) and Yifan Xu(CHN) at the Louis Armstrong Court.
