The 2020 ATP Finals champion once again power past his compatriot Andrey Rublev in the straight sets(7-5, 6-2, 6-3) for his first semifinal at Down Under major event. Medvedev now leads World No.8 Rublev 4-0 in their head to head record.
“We had some unbelievable rallies, and after that point, it’s tough to breathe … I think I’m one of the few players to make Andrey that tired and I’m quite happy about it,” Medvedev said after winning his 19th consecutive match.
Andrey Rublev is a compatriot while one of the best friends for Daniil Medvedev. The 2019 US Open finalist also acknowledged that playing a friend is “never easy”.
“This Match Is Really Unbelievable”, says Daniil Medvedev
Andrey Rublev, the fastest server of the match, landed eight aces and won 56% second service points and 82% net points. Ultimately, the 23-years-old got a game point after winning a breathtaking 43-shot rally against his 25-years-old countryman.
“I know how to neutralise his amazing big shots (and) that was definitely one of the best matches I played lately, not only here but even last year. This match is really unbelievable because he was playing really well, I managed to beat him in three sets even without a tiebreak, and I’m pleased about it,” added Medvedev, who fired 14 aces and won 80% of first-serve points in his quarterfinal match.
