“Tough To Breathe”: Daniil Medvedev Reacts After Defeating Andrey Rublev at Australian Open 2021

No.4 seed Daniil Medvedev has now entered into his third Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open 2021 after defeating No.7 seed Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.  

The 2020 ATP Finals champion once again power past his compatriot Andrey Rublev in the straight sets(7-5, 6-2, 6-3) for his first semifinal at Down Under major event. Medvedev now leads World No.8 Rublev 4-0 in their head to head record. 

“We had some unbelievable rallies, and after that point, it’s tough to breathe … I think I’m one of the few players to make Andrey that tired and I’m quite happy about it,” Medvedev said after winning his 19th consecutive match. 

Andrey Rublev is a compatriot while one of the best friends for Daniil Medvedev. The 2019 US Open finalist also acknowledged that playing a friend is “never easy”

“This Match Is Really Unbelievable”, says Daniil Medvedev  

Andrey Rublev, the fastest server of the match, landed eight aces and won 56% second service points and 82% net points. Ultimately, the 23-years-old got a game point after winning a breathtaking 43-shot rally against his 25-years-old countryman.

“I know how to neutralise his amazing big shots (and) that was definitely one of the best matches I played lately, not only here but even last year. This match is really unbelievable because he was playing really well, I managed to beat him in three sets even without a tiebreak, and I’m pleased about it,” added Medvedev, who fired 14 aces and won 80% of first-serve points in his quarterfinal match. 

For a championship match spot, Daniil Medvedev will face No.2 seed Rafael Nadal or No.6 Stefanos Tsitispas
