“That’s What Pi**ed Me Off a Little Bit Because the Anti-Doping Rules Are So Strict” – Dominic Thiem on ‘Red Bull Can Ban’

What stood out in the second-round match at the US Open was not the fact that Dominic Thiem won in straight sets. Instead, the Red bull incident that took place on the court during the match!

During one of the breaks between the match, the 27-year-old went on to grab his Red Bull can, but couldn’t do so as the organizers stepped in.

Apparently, the player could not have the drink directly from the can as the brand was not a sponsor of the event! And as a result, it could not be advertised on TV.

The Austrian did not seem very happy with this interference by the organizers and sounded angry.

“Give me a plain cup, I’ll somehow cover it and then I’ll put it in… I mean what the heck is this?”, the world no.03 was heard saying on the court after being interrupted.

After the proposition by the tennis star, the drink was poured into a plain cup for him. This site was not visible to the audience as someone held up a towel to block the brand name.

Explaining why he needed the drink, he said that Red Bull helps him a lot. He also is one of only four tennis players to be sponsored by the brand.

Dominic Thiem was being cautious owing to the strict anti-doping rules

Originally, the organizers were insisting on taking the can away from Thiem and pouring the drink in a cup. But with the strict anti-doping measures, the Austrian did not want the can to go out of sight. Hence, he pushed for the activity to happen in front of him on the court.

“They wanted to go out with the open can and fill it in a plain cup without me observing it. That’s what pissed me off a little bit because the anti-doping rules are so strict. I don’t want to lose the can out of my sight. In general, they have such strict rules these days, and they propose me to fill the can in a plain cup without me observing it.”, the three-time grand slam finalist said during his press conference.

The match was between Indian Sumit Nagal and Dominic Thiem in which the latter won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. His next opponent will be Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic from whom he is expecting a solid fight.

“Definitely one of the best players of the last decade, a true champion. Even though for sure he’s not on the top of his game, he’s always dangerous for a big and deep run in these big tournaments. It’s not a guy I want to face in the third round as he’s a former champion. On a good day, he can beat anybody. Going to be a real tough one.”, Thiem said.
