The US Open champion Dominic Thiem stunned Rafael Nadal at the ATP Finals 2020 in a second round-robin match. Austrian took just 72 minutes to defeat the Spanish in the straight sets(7-6, 7-6) at the O2 Arena on Tuesday.

It is the second victory against Spaniard and seventh against Top 10 players for Thiem in this season. Dominic met nine top ten players in the 2020 ATP Tours so far.

After a comfortable victory against world number two, world number three said in an on-court interview, “I think it was a great match from the first to the last point.”

French Open 2020 quarterfinalist continued, “I was pretty lucky to get that first set. I was 2/5 down in the tie-break.” Thiem feels it is nice to win first set against 20 times Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal. Domi added, “Rafa is still there 100 per cent from the first to the last point. I knew that maybe I had a slight advantage when I won the first set, but I still had to stay super focussed.”

“The Match Was at a Very High Level With All Strokes”: Dominic Thiem

While 27-years-old Austrian is now unbeaten at the ATP Finals 2020, he is one step closer to semifinals in the second consecutive year.

Speaking about his match performance, Theim explained, “I am very happy with the way I served because most of the time when I get the first serve in, I am on the offence.”

Austrian added, “I have a good percentage to win the point. When I was in difficult situations like the first-set tie-break… the service helped me out a lot.” Besides, he thinks the service may be the most important stroke on the indoor surface.

Dominic will be the first player to reach semifinals at the ATP Finals 2020 If Stefanos Tsitsipas beats Andrey Rublev.
