Spanish tennis star Garbine Muguruza fulfilled her dream of winning a French Open title in 2016. She defeated top-seeded Serena Williams in the event finals. Eventually, It became the maiden Grand Slam title for Spaniard. 

Moreover, Garbine Muguruza said that playing and winning a title at the Roland Garros is a remarkable thing for Spanish tennis players because it is played on clay courts. Notably, Her male compatriot Rafael Nadal has won 12 singles titles in French Open.

In a recent with el Tiempo, Garbine Muguruza reminisced her first Grand Slam memories in Paris. Spanish explained her game plan for her dream title, “I had decided, a long time ago, not to look at the competition chart. That made me very anxious. So for a long time, I only think about the game I have to play. But when the final is over it is inevitable, so despite the pressure and exhaustion of the entire tournament, I decided to give it my all and it arrived.”

Garbine Muguruza also said “I have a very special memory. Roland Garros is a tournament with great significance in Spain, as it is played on clay and I trained as a tennis player on that surface. So I always dreamed of winning that tournament. It was very special that it was my first Grand Slam, on top of that I played very well despite my nerves and what it meant to play against Serena.”

Beating one of the greatest players in tennis history is not an easy thing, however, Garbine Muguruza did in the second attempt by hard word, and past experiences. Notably, Spaniard lost to Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon finals.

She is a legend, and beating her has not been easy.”
