“Rafael Nadal Had No Hardships”: Dominic Thiem Picks His Favorite Player For French Open 2020

Dominic Thiem, the newest grand slam champion is in good form. Despite that, the Austrian does not consider himself as the no.1 candidate to become the finalist, at the French Open. 

According to Thiem, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the favorites at the event, both being the former champions.

“Nadal and Djokovic are also the absolute favorites in Paris.”, He said in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag.” 

The 27-year-old has expectations from Nadal in particular. And why would he not? The Spaniard is known as the ‘king of clay’ for a reason. He has won 12 French Open titles already and will be aiming for his 13th one this season.

“He had no hardships with the New York trip, he trained on the sand the whole time. And he’s the best player of all time on clay.”, the current world no.3 said.

Thiem has lost the French open finals twice in a row against Nadal the past two years in Paris. For the US Open this year, Nadal did not list himself for the event and Djokovic was disqualified due to an unfortunate circumstance. This made the way easier for Thiem and Alexander Zverev to reach the finals, which resulted in Thiem lifting up his first slam trophy! 

“Yes, It Hurt Me Because I Know How he Felt”- Thiem

It took Thiem four finals to finally win his maiden grand slam title. But the moment remained bittersweet for the Austrian, considering the bond he shares with Zverev. He confessed it would have been easier competing and winning against somebody else.

“Yes, it hurt me because I know how he felt. I really like him, so it would have been easier against other players. I wish him from the bottom of my heart that he will soon win a Grand Slam tournament.”, Thiem said.

The two battled to win the title in a thrilling five-setter and it was Thiem who took home the trophy.
