“I’m Going In The Right Direction”- Serena Williams Enters Third Round of US Open 2020, To Face Sloane Stephens

Former world number one Serena Williams reached third of this year’s US Open at Flushing Meadows. Six times ongoing event champion beat unseeded Russian Margarita Gasparyan in the straight sets(6-2, 6-4). 

23 times Grand Slam has taken only 93 minutes to overcome the world no.117 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night. Besides, Williams did not lose a match before the third round since 1998. 

After the match, Serena Williams said, “I feel like every day I’m on a new journey, and in this tournament in particular and this year. So I feel really good. I feel like I’m on that journey and I’m going in the right direction.”

Additionally, Serena Williams went on to share about her past match experiences, “I felt like she returned really well, and I feel like what’s held me back in the past is getting frustrated. I’m out here, fighting, and I felt like the minor setbacks would help me know what not to do next time.”

She also mentioned, “The only thing that gets me flustered is really me because I always feel like I’m not winning every point. That doesn’t make sense, and usually, I’m just calm.”

Serena Williams Vs Sloane Stephens – Head to Head 

Moreover, The 38-years-old Serena Williams will play her third-round match on Saturday. It will be against Sloane Stephens, who won US Open championship in 2017.

The head to head, Serena leads her countrywoman Stephens in 5-1. However, They did not play since the 2015 Roland Garros, where Williams defeated compatriot Sloane in three sets. In the 2013 US Open, the event champion Serena overcame the 15th seeded Stephens at the round of 16 as well.

Serena Williams said of Sloane Stephens, “She’s such a good player and plays so smooth, sort of like Miloslav Mecir back in the day. She’ll look like she’s not expending much energy and then bam! There are five winners. She’s obviously won here before and beaten me before, so she knows how to play well. It’s not easy, so I’m glad I had a tough match today to get ready for that one.”
