With the World Team Tennis tournament taking place in The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia Currently, all the eyes remain on Queen V, Venus Williams. The former world number one is one of the most respected players participating in the tournament and is getting her share of attention. But surprisingly enough the tennis star is nowhere near the top ranking in this season of the WTT event.
Taking that spot this season is the 21-year-old American star, Sofia Kenin. The Australian Open champion faced Williams twice within 24 hours on Saturday, in the women’s singles as well as the doubles category, and won both times.
Moreover, She remains unbeaten in the singles category so far except her only loss to Kim Clijsters. Although talking about the highest ranking in this tournament with men and women both competing, Kenin is 20 ranking spots ahead of the highest-ranked male, her teammate Taylor Fritz.
“I Didn’t Want To Play Badly Against Her(Venus Williams)”- Sofia Kenin
The current world number four was a child prodigy and met many of the famous tennis stars at a very young age.
“I’ve had to have a few idols, of course,” Kenin explained. “But she’s(Venus Williams) one of them. She’s an icon to me as well so I was pretty tight going into the match. I knew it was going to be an amazing experience, so I was super happy to be playing against her, and to get the win it was even better.”
Also, It seemed to be nerve-wracking yet a stunning experience for Kenin to play against one the all-time greats and win twice in a row!
“I wanted to play well, I didn’t want to play badly against her. I tried not to focus on the fact that I’m playing Venus Williams and tried to focus on myself. To show that I’m Sofia Kenin is the cherry on top.” the young star concluded.
