“I Know How It Is To Play”: Dominic Thiem on Conditions at French Open 2020 after First Round Win



After the US Open triumph in New York, Dominic Thiem is now playing at the French Open in Paris. Austrian also crushed Croatian Marin Cilic in his opening round match on Monday.

While many players have worried about the current Paris weather, the 27-years-old admits he loves these conditions.   

For the second time on the season, Thiem encountered former US Open winner Marin Cilic at Roland Garros, where he is one of the favorites to win the title.

The world number three took two hours and six minutes to overcome world number forty while Thiem continues to lead Cilic in head to head 4-0. 


Speaking about his first match victory of French Open 2020 at the post-match interview, Thiem said,  “I didn’t want to lose too much tension after my victory in New York, and I’m really how I did it, really happy with my first round.

“I was facing another great champion today, so the transition to the clay and the cold conditions worked out really well.”, He added.

Whereas Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, and many others have raised concers over the French Open 2020 conditions, Thiem explained that It was always like that here. 


Additionally, the two-times French Open finalist went on to say, “I love the conditions because I’m from Austria, so I know how it is to play in these cold conditions.”

Back in juniors and when I started to play Futures, it was always like that, 10, 15 degrees cold, so I love it when it’s not too fast, so I can be a little bit behind the baseline, make a lot of returns in court. I feel well, and I felt well from the first moment I came here again this year, so I’m looking forward to an exciting second round.” He concluded.
