“I Did Not Forget How To Play Tennis”- Donna Vekic After Defeating Arantxa Rus In Palermo Ladies Open

The Palermo Ladies Open is taking place with stringent rules on Clay surface. Players are not allowing to handshake and need to handle their towels on their own. No showers, no autographs or photos with fans. A limited number of fans have been allowing into the 1,500-seat capacity stadium with proper social distancing measures.

WTA tournament is running in Country Time Club, Italy as planned despite the COVID crisis and withdrawal of top players, including Simona Halep from the tournament. The sixth seed Donna Vekic faced  Arantxa Rus of Netherlands in the opening round. Though the windy climate does not reduce the player’s momentum to play their best.

The match was played for an hour and 15 minutes. Eventually, World No.24 Donna Vekic defeated Arantxa Rus in the straight sets(6-1, 6-2) with her top-notching playing skills and incredible speed.

After winning the match, Vekic talked to the press “Especially it is a really tricky condition. It’s been windy. The ball was spinning a lot with all over the court. I was happy that I did not forget how to play tennis.”

Moreover, Croatian felt relieved and happy. Donna Vekic did not play any matches for five months. Vekic believed her physical form is in good condition than ever before. She went through tough practice in Monaco. While she wants to be fit, Besides, she never expects to be perfect.

In a recent interview, Donna Vekic expressed her frustration of not allowed her full team to take part in the tournament and challenges. 

While She does not want to complain about the hotel and site, Croatian understood challenges for conducting the tournament financially.

However, she felt really happy to play in the Palermo Open. But she was frustrated by the onsite regulations.

Donna Vekic added that “I Don’t want to pretend that I am locked in a room the whole when I went to dinner in the city and sure we are careful not being close to people. But I am not lost in the room. 90% of players are not so.” She also expressed her concerns of everyone needs to respect the rules and there won’t be any contradiction.

Also, Kristina Pliskova, Sara Errani, Laura Siegemund, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Samsonova, Jasmine Paolini, Dayana Yastremska, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto won their matches and qualified to the second round.
