Novak Djokovic is the only one from the ‘big three’ to be participating in the Western and southern as well as the US Open. He recently qualified for the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday.

Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal decided against being a part of the US Open this year. Federer is taking a recovery break for his knee injury for the whole of 2020. On the other hand, Nadal did not want to risk going to the US, where the coronavirus cases are still considerable.

The world no.01 fully understands the Spaniard’s situation and supports his decision. According to him, these are unpredictable times and everyone’s personal decisions must be respected.

“I can understand why he stayed in Europe,” Djokovic said of Nadal. “Obviously, these kinds of circumstances are very unpredictable. I guess he didn’t want to risk, you know, his health, the health of his team members, you know, coming here. If that is the reason – I think that’s what I saw in his statement – I fully understand that.”, the 17-time grand slam champion said.

“Look, every continent on this planet is going through its own battle and different situations, so it’s hard, for us tennis players, to make easy decisions.”, He added.

This Year’s Ranking System Protecting All The Players – Djokovic

Another reason why the no.02 chose to skip the US Open and try for his 13th French Open title, was is a physical condition.

The tight schedule calls for a sudden change from hard to clay courts which strains the body. Keeping this in mind the ATP ranking rules have also been changed to not affect those deciding to skip tournaments this year.

“Of course, that’s why the ranking system that is in place till the next year is actually protecting him and all the players that don’t want to compete, not just on the US Tour but players who might not want to compete for a couple of months, which is understandable.”, Novak commented.

I postponed my decision just to understand what the rules would be like and whether we could return to Europe in a simple way. But I am very happy to have come.”
