Roger Federer, who has been off-court for a long time now, cannot wait to get back on the court! The Swiss was last seen playing at the Australian Open in January this year, after which the coronavirus hit. But even after the tournaments resumed, Federer could not be back on the court.
During the lockdown, the 39-year-old announced that he will have to miss the rest of the 2020 season due to his prolonged knee injury. He decided to take a rehabilitation break and take time to recover fully.
Considering his age and his injury status, many thought that the 20-time grand slam champion might not make it back on the court. But Federer proved all the rumors false by expressing how excited he is to return to the game. Federer opened up about his ‘burning desire’ to play and be back!
“I am waiting and burning on the inside to go back on the Tour again.” the Swiss said on Talk Tennis podcast.
“It’s been a tough year for my knee and my health, really. Thankfully, with COVID-19, I’ve been healthy, everybody around me as well. Also, the Tour coming to a halt was tough to see, but it’s back now, so that’s nice…I can’t wait to come back myself and hopefully, join in the action and play with the best again.”, He added.
“We’ll Have a Couple More Years of Roger” – Craig Tiley
The head of tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, recently shared his view about Federer’s retirement too. He expects him to play for a couple of more years before he can be sent off with a stadium full of people!
“I’ve known Roger for a long time, and I think we’ll have a couple more years of Roger.”, he said while talking to the Wide World of Sports.
“I’ll certainly use that as motivation to encourage him to keep playing until we can give him a proper send-off in front of a full crowd. I don’t know if it will have much impact, but I’ll give it a go!” he added.
Federer, who missed the US open that Dominic Thiem won and will also cut the French Open, is currently watching it from Switzerland, he says.
