“He Can Beat Anybody”- Dominic Thiem Admires Marin Cilic Ahead of US Open Clash

World No.03 Dominic Thiem will face off Marin Cilic for the third time on his career at US Open. While Austrian has seeded number two in the ongoing New York major event, the 31st seed has allotted for Croatian. However, Thiem lauds the former US Open champion for his career achievements. 

The exciting third-round match between aspiring Thiem and brave heart Cilic will be played on Saturday. Earlier, second-seeded Thiem has landed at the round of 32 after defeating Indian Sumit Nagal in straight sets on Thursday. Besides, Former World No.03 Cilic overcame the unseeded Norbert Gombos in his previous match.

“He’s Not a Guy I Want to Face in the Third Round”- Dominic Thiem

27-years-old Thiem defeated the 31-years-old Cilic twice on hard courts in his career. For this reason, He leads Croatian in head to head(2-0). However, Austrian expects a huge challenge from world no.38 because of his experience and recent achievements. 

Marin Cilic has won a Grand Slam title(2014 US Open) and 18 ATP tour titles so far. He reached the finals at the 2017 Wimbledon and the 2018 Australian Open as well. 

Additionally, Dominic Thiem said, “Not from the players, but from an outside perspective, he’s underrated because he achieved almost everything that you can achieve as a tennis player: Grand Slam champion, [ATP] Masters 1000 champion, played two other Grand Slam finals. Definitely one of the best players of the past decade [and] a true champion.”

Austrian went on to praise his upcoming match opponent, “He’s always dangerous for a big and deep run in these big tournaments. He’s not a guy I want to face in the third round because he’s a former champion. He can beat anybody on a good day.”
