“Federer Is Always Number 1″: Nadia Petrova Heaps Praise on Roger After Nadal Equaled Grand Slam Record

Roger Federer

After a shocking final at the French open 2020, where Djokovic lost in straight sets, Nadal lifted his 13th Roland Garros trophy. This 13th title for Nadal was also his 20th Grand slam singles win.

With this, Nadal went on to equal the legend Roger Federer with 20 titles at the top of the hierarchy. Having equaled the all-time favorite, Nadal automatically earned himself the title of GOAT.

But Nadia Petrova, the retired Russian tennis player, has a different preference. Petrova while talking to the GoTennis website in Russia, said that for her Federer will always remain her no.1.

She went on to praise the Swiss, his style as well his game on different surfaces. Nadia also mentioned that Federer still has a more significant number of victories and a number of weeks of being the No.1.

“For me, Federer is always number 1. In terms of style, the ability to play well on any surface. If I’m not mistaken, he has the most tournament victories – apart from the Majors (among the Big 3). And how many years Roger Federer was the World No. 1.” Nadia Petrova said.

The former no.3 though favors Federer, believes that Nadal being younger than the Federer, may overtake him in the race to the greatest number of grand slam titles. She also did acknowledge the Spaniard’s historic 13th French open win and saw it as something no one will ever be able to repeat.

“At the same time, the achievement of Nadal, 13 league titles at Roland Garros, no one will ever repeat it. Moreover, he is younger than Federer and can double him in the number of final victories in Grand Slam tournaments. But it will be a separate conversation. Roger is perfect for me.”, said the 38-year-old, who will not change her mind even if Nadal wins 35 Roland Garros!
