The NextGen Jannik Sinner is now one step closer to lift his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open 2021. The 19-year-old will now lock with Hubert Hurkacz in the championship match. If Italian defeats Polish, he will become the youngest title winner of the Miami Open since 1985. However, Sinner’s coach Riccardo Piatti believes Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova’s mentality could help his pupil.

“Maria Is An Example That She Has A Great Mentality To Be A Champion”: Riccardo Piatti

Piatti also worked with the five-time Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova, for several months. In September 2019, the famous coach purposely took Jannik Sinner out to dinner with the former World No.1s Maria Sharapova and Marat Safin.

“I wanted Jannik to understand the mentality of a No.1 Maria(Sharapova) has priorities,” Piatti said in a recent interview with men’s professional tennis website.

“When she is on the court, she is watching the ball, hitting the ball and doing everything perfectly. When she plays points, she’s focused on playing the points. And When she’s off the court, she’s focused on the fitness part, the physical part. When she finishes everything, she’s social,” Sinner’s coach added.

The Italian coach also stressed newcomers learn lessons from the toughest players like Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.

Piatti continued, “It’s not me explaining (a lesson), but another one like Nadal or Maria. He saw the mentality of these players. Maria was very, very important for him and me.”

Rafa Is Quite Similar To Jannik, says coach Piatti

Jannik Sinner had spent a couple of weeks with the 20-time Grand Slam champion and one of his idols Rafael Nadal during the Australian Open summer series in Adelaide. Riccardo Piatti was delighted when he received a call from Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya regarding Spaniard’s quarantine training partner.

“Of course, I was very happy because you need to live with these guys. These guys are quite simple and focused on what they are doing, and Jannik likes (this), and he understands that Rafa is quite similar to him. The only difference is he won 20 Slams—small difference,” Piatti expressed with a laugh.

“He understands, ‘Okay, if I do everything correct and I’m young, and I need to continue like this, I can reach some of my dreams.’ It was in the perfect moment of his career. I think that these 14 days for Jannik were perfect to understand Rafa’s mind.” Sinner’s coach concluded.
