World No.4 Alexander Zverev will lock horns with Lloyd Harris for a semifinal spot at the US Open 2021. Ahead of the quarter-final clash, German revealed he struggled to return Harris’ service in the recent matchup at the Western and Southern Open 2021.
Harris has been playing standard tennis since the beginning of the 2021 season. Most notably, he reached the first-ever ATP 500 final at the Dubai Tennis Championships, and he especially upset the top ten players, Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal.Embed from Getty Images
At the 2021 New York major event, the unseeded CapeTownian made his Grand Slam quarterfinal debut after stunning No.22 seed Reilly Opelka, No.7 seed Denis Shapovalvo, Ernesto Escobedo and No.25 seed Karen Khachanov.
“Lloyd Harris Is Showing The High Level Here Again”, says Zverev
However, Alexander Zverev will meet Lloyd Harris for the third time in the ATP Tour. German leads South African 2-0 in their head-to-head series.
When asked about a two-time match up with Lloyd Harris in the post-match interview, Zverev said, “I think he’s somebody that is improving a lot this year.”
“I think I said that to someone. I don’t remember who it was in the locker room. I said, like, I feel Lloyd has been winning two, three matches every single week, doesn’t matter where he’s playing. He’s showing the high level here again,” German added.Embed from Getty Images
At the Western and Southern Open 2021, Zverev defeated Harris in straight sets (7-6, 6-2). At the same time, Harris won 67% first-serve points while Zverev claimed 64%.
“Of course, the match(Harris vs Opelka) is not over yet, but if it’s against Lloyd, he’s playing incredible, and he’s also serving incredible. In Cincinnati, I was struggling a lot to return his serve in the first set. Yeah, it’s gonna be a tough one, definitely,” World No.4 explained.
