Former World No.1 Roger Federer has been going through ups and downs since his comeback following a 13-month layoff. However, now Swiss Maestro has registered his first significant victory in his return after stunning the former US Open champion Marin Cilic at the French Open 2021.

After the Geneva Open Round of 16 exits, the 20-time Grand Slam champion decided to appraise himself. As a result, he came to Paris this year. No.8 seed claimed a comfortable straight-sets win over Uzbek qualifier Denis Istomin in the first round.

To reach the third round in Roland Garros, Federer locked horns with former World No.3 Cilic on Philippe Chatrier court. Swiss captured the first set against Croatian 6-2, but he gave up the second set by the same margin.

“I was able to understand what I needed to do, and today was different. Marin has the game, the big game, and you do not know how long he can maintain that, how long I am to maintain my level. It was interesting,” Roger Federer said in the post-match interview.

The 2009 champion bounced back in the third set and seized that in the tie-breaker 7(7)-6(4). Federer eventually reserved his third round spot after taking the fourth set(6-2) from Cilic.

“Especially the second and third set. It gave me a lot of information. It was very good from that end. I feel like I surprised myself a little bit. I did not expect to play that well or have the energy like this. It was great. Breaker third set, it was a big moment. I have not been in those forever. It was nice to be in those moments,” Swiss added.

“I am Going To Go Super Deep or Go Past The Novak Section”, says Roger Federer

Federer also revealed he felt super confident about upcoming encounters on the Parisian clay. He will now face German Dominik Koepfer in the third round. It will be the first meeting between both of them in the ATP Tour.

Federer continued, “I would be lying if I said it was all Paris and nothing after that. This is my preparation. It starts when the Grass court season comes around. This is how it is. I believe there is no way I am going to go super deep or go past the Novak section.”

“I am focused on my next round. In the first round, I did not surprise myself, but in the second round, I did. The mind is getting stronger. I have more clarity, more confidence growing in me.”

“I know where to go and where not to go. It is crazy how quickly you lose all of that. Sometimes making the wrong decisions costs you a break. That is where I think this last match with Cilic gives me good information.”

The French Open 2021 is the third tournament for Roger Federer this season. He has won three out of five matches so far.
