Italian rising star Lorenzo Musetti stepped into his first ATP 500 event’s semifinal after crushing out Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov at the Acapulco Open 2021. However, the 19-years-old from Carrara admits he didn’t anticipate he would play the semifinal in Mexico.

Musetti has been registering several personal histories since he arrived as a qualifier in beach resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast. With the back-to-back straight-sets victories, he dived into the main draw of the event.

“A Lot Of My Goals Came True Tonight”: Musetti After Reserving A Top 100 Berth

After defeating World No.9 Diego Schwartzman in the first round, Lorenzo Musseti marked his maiden top 10 and hard court win. Before reaching the quarterfinal, he overcame the former World No.29 Frances Tiafoe of America. With the help of a straight sets(6-4, 7-6) win over No.5 seed Grigor Dimitrov, Musetti will have made top 100 debut by next week.

“It is really tough to describe how I feel right now. One word is tired, almost exhausted, but I’m really, really happy. I am in a semi-final, finally, and I will be in the Top 100 next week. A lot of my goals came true tonight. I performed really well, and I am proud of myself,” Musseti stated in the post-match interview.

Lorenzo continued, “(It’s) the best of the week of my life, simple. I came here to play qualifying, and of course, I wanted to get through it and gain some points and experience. But I didn’t expect to reach the semi-finals, for sure. I am really excited about this, and I am excited about how I am playing.”

“Tsitsipas Will Be Really Tough”, says Lorenzo Musseti

Italian NextGen, who has competed in only 11 tour-level matches, will now lock horns with World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas for the first time. No.1 seed Greek made his first last four in his first appearance at the Acapulco Open after beating Benoit Paire, John Isner and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

“Tsitsipas will be really tough. He is playing well. But I am playing well too. Every day is a different day. I will face one of Tour’s biggest guys, and I will try to do my best. Let’s see what happens,” Lorenzo added.

In the end, Musseti said that he would try to sleep as soon as he can. And he will relax tomorrow and try to give his best on the court.
