At the crucial stage of the French Open 2021, the greatest rivals of tennis Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will lock horns for a championship match spot on Parisian clay. Nevertheless, Serbian is optimistic ahead of the 8th meeting against the Spaniard in Roland Garros.
The semifinal match will be the 58th encounter between Serbian and Spaniard. Djokovic leads Nadal 29-28 in their head-to-head series. In the Paris major event, Rafa won 6 out of 7 matches played against Nole.
However, No.1 seed Serb has confirmed his semifinal seat for the third consecutive time in the French Open following four sets(6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5) victory over Italian Matteo Berrettini.
When asked about the Nadal clash in the post-match interview, Djokovic positively said, “I am confident. I believe I can win. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. So let’s have a great battle.”
World No.1 continued, “Let’s face it. It’s not like any other match. It’s the biggest challenge in tennis. Each time we face each other, there is extra tension. The vibe is different walking on the court with him, but I think that is why our rivalry is, I feel, historic for tennis.”
“I Hope I Will Be Able To Perform Better Than In 2020”, says Novak Djokovic
In the French Open 2020 final, Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets(6-0, 6-2, 7-5) to claim his 13th title and 20th Grand Slam. On the other hand, Serbian is the second player to stun the Spaniard in Roland Garros history.
While Swedish Robin Soderling bested Rafael Nadal in the 2009 French Open fourth round, the 34-year-old from Belgrade thrashed Spanish at the 2015 quarterfinal.
The 2016 Roland Garros champion further added, “I’m not the only one who beat him here. Soderling did, but that’s it, haha. We had some battles over the years, but last year he dominated. So conditions are going to be different. I hope I will be able to perform better than in 2020.”
In the latest meeting, Nadal conquered Djokovic in the three sets(7-5, 1-6, 6-3) at the 2021 Italian Open championship match.
No.3 seed Rafael Nadal reached the semifinal for the fifth consecutive time after defeating Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the four sets(6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0).
