“Andy Is A True Legend”: Andrey Rublev on Facing Andy Murray at Rotterdam Open 2021 Second Round

For the second time in the ATP Tour, Andy Murray and Andrey Rublev are meeting each other for a third-round spot at the ongoing Rotterdam Open 2021. However, the current World No.8 described his former World No.1 opponent as a true legend.   

Even though the 33-years-old Scot and the 23-years-old Russian met nearly four years ago, they still really have mutual respect.

No.4 seed Rublev stormed into the second round in Rotterdam Ahoy after a straight-sets(7-6, 6-3) win over American Marcos Giron.

Andrey does not see a draw of the ATP 500 tournament. As a result, he was surprised during the press meet when told his next round opponent three-time Grand Slam champion none other than Andy Murray.

“Oof! I didn’t know, actually,” Rublev said with a smile. “We’ll see. It’s going to be interesting. It’s Andy. He’s a legend.”

The 2020 ATP Finals contestant continued, “Andy is a true legend, and I have a really good connection with him. I really like him as a person and as a player. He destroyed me once in the past. I’m sure we’ll have great, long rallies, and it will be a fight.”

Rublev further expressed that the match is going to be fun and exciting.

At the 2017 Australian Open, No.1 seed Murray crushed debutant Rublev in the straight-sets(6-3, 6-0, 6-2) during the round of 64. And Andy leads Andrey 1-0 in their head-to-head series.

In recent years, the former US Open champion is struggling to find his form due to his hip injury. On the other hand, the upcoming star has worked a lot on himself and included his name in the elite players’ list.   

Speaking about an encounter against a top ten player Rublev, Murray said, “He’ll be around at the top of the game for a long time because he’s got a great work ethic. And he’s a very good player.”

The Scot additionally added, “I played him when he was very young at the Australian Open… he went for it. He hit the big ball back then. “He physically was not that strong then, but I think he’s worked really hard on that side of things.”

Murray further emphasised that Rublev is always on the court and hitting balls every minute, and he has practised with him a few times. Andy also unveiled one of the secrets behind Andrey’s success that Rublev considers every training session as a match.
