Hunting for first Grand Slam crown, World No.4 Daniil Medvedev has now advanced to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open 2021. Meanwhile, No.4 seed admits that what Big 3 did in tennis is amazing.
Having several records under their names, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are called Big 3 in the men’s tennis world. And while Swiss Maestro and Spaniard have 20 Grand Slam titles in their accounts, the Serb has won 17 major event crowns so far.
Following a straight-set victory against American Mackenzie McDonald in the fourth round of the Melbourne major event, the 25-years-old tennis professional from Russia was asked “which member of the Big Three he believed to be the superior player.”
Medvedev replied, “For me, (I pick) all of the three because no matter how many Grand Slams they all have at the end of their careers, what they did in tennis is amazing.”
“I remember when Pete Sampras beat the record [number] of Grand Slams [won], I was really young. I remember all the news, sports news, saying, ‘This record is forever.’ Just like Messi and Ronaldo in football. Then the three guys came, they not [only] beat the record, they destroyed the record,” the 2020 ATP Finals champion added.
“I Feel Like I’m One Of The Top Players In The World”, says Daniil Medvedev
On the other hand, speaking about the possibility of reaching Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam record tally of 20 titles, Medvedev said, “(It) is amazing because, for example, me, I’m 25, I’m playing good tennis. I feel like I’m one of the top players in the world. I have zero slams.”
2020 US Open semi-finalist continued, “Imagine me (getting) to 20, I (would) need to win five years in a row every Slam… against amazing opponents, (in) five-set matches (and) not be injured. (Those are)ridiculous numbers. For me, they’re the three, for sure, greatest players in the history of tennis.”
However, Daniil Medvedev will now lock horns with his countryman and No.7 seed Andrey Rublev for a semifinal spot at the Australian Open 2021.
