“Achieved Revenge For My Loss”: Dominic Thiem After Defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas at ATP Finals 2020

World number three Dominic Thiem eyes on his maiden title at the ATP Finals 2020. Austrian has now registered his first victory after outlasting the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsiipas in two hours and 17 minutes rally.

It was the first match between Thiem and Tsitsipas since 2019 ATP Finals. And while Austrian leads Greek in the head to head 4-3, Stef keeps one step ahead of Domi at the ATP Finals. Amidst injury concern and lack of indoor preparation, the US Open champion faced World No.06 Tsitsipas in the opening match on Sunday.

Followed by several forehand exchanges, the match concluded in the three sets at the O2 Arena. Thiem defeated Tsitsipas by a scoreline of 7-6,4-6, 6-3 and became a leader in London 2020 Group. 

In the post-match on-court interview, Dominic Thiem said, “I experienced in the past four years how important it is to have a good start in this tournament, to win the first match ideally. I am very happy that I did it”

“Every Win Against Stefanos Is Something Special”: Dominic Thiem

Thiem missed an opportunity to win the ATP Finals title after a loss against Tsitsipas in 2019. When Austrian comparing his last year match against Tsitsipas, Dominic explained, “Today was a little bit different [to last year]… [There were] only two breaks in the whole match.” 

Besides, Austrian wrote on his website about recent victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas, “In my eighth game against the Greek, I won my fifth match, I achieved revenge for my loss at the Masters final of 2019. This is a perfect start into the season final. I got myself into a good position for the other group matches.”

While Dominic usually keeps good record against top ten players, he won six of eight matches this year. Thiem added, “I think the conditions are pretty fast here. So I am super happy with my win. Every win against a Top 10 player at the Nitto ATP Finals is something special.”

Dominic also had all appreciation for his past match opponent. Additionally, He went on to say, “every win against Stefanos is something special because he is such a great player. He is established and has won so many big titles already.”
